Recuva is a freeware that can recover deleted files not only from any normal folder on your hard drive, but also from your Recycle Bin, digital camera or MP3 player. Files can be recovered from a formatted drive as well. You can recover deleted emails from Microsoft Outlook Express, Mozilla Thunderbird or Windows Live Mail. Similarly, unsaved Word ID can also be recovered. The state of the file is color coded; green files can be easily recovered, while red files are hard to recover. Also available as a portable version, Recuva is just a 3.7 MB download.

Doubtless one of the quickest and simplest ways to restore accidentally deleted data is by using Undelete Plus. This software allows you to not only recover files that had once been inside the emptied Recycle Bin, but also recover permanently deleted files that are deleted using Shift + Delete, and thus never enter the Recycle Bin. Similarly, you can recover files that have been deleted from the command prompt as well. It can also recover images from memory card formats such as CF, SmartMedia, MultiMedia and Secure Digital.

Avira UnErase is a free data recovery software from the makers of Avira antivirus software. This software can recover data deleted accidentally, due to virus infection or austerely due to corruption. While it can recover files in a way similar to other software mentioned before, it can also recover from compressed or encrypted NTFS and NTFS5 file systems. It shows files detected for recovery with a level of recoverability for each particular file, but it has been seen that even files marked as “poor” can be easily recovered with a high success rate. The file is just 403 KB to download. This is a fully functional version for personal use.

Maybe the simplest of all the data recovery tools to use, FreeUndelete from Officerecovery.com lets you, austerely as the name suggests, undelete files. This utility can recover deleted files from NTFS 1.0, NTFS 2.0, FAT12, FAT16 and FAT32 file systems. It works on Windows XP, 2000, NT 4 (SP2 or higher required), Windows 2003 Server, but Windows 95/98 are not supported. It is simple to use and requires no special user skills. All that the user needs to do is select the drive to be scanned for deleted files and press the Scan button. After scanning is perfect, the recoverable file list is showed, from which the user can select the files to be recovered and recover them to the destination drive. The setup file size is just 708 KB.
